EU Academy XIII, Brussels 14-15 May Register now!
“Steering the EU’s compass towards the public interest” is the theme of the thirteenth edition of our EU Academy taking place in Brussels on 14–15 May. The current political and institutional context is extremely challenging for public advocates. A strategic approach to engaging with the institutions is more important than ever to ensure public interest voices are heard.
This interactive and practical two-day training for advocates aims at enhancing their understanding of EU decision-making processes and empowering them to defend the public interest. The team of trainers includes Marc-Olivier Herman (EUChanger), Joost Mulder (Better Europe), Francesca Gater (ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies), and insiders from EU institutions.

Tailored trainings: Earthsight, Friends of the Earth Europe, Oxfam Spark EU Climate Action
In January and February we provided trainings on EU advocacy for the Earthsight team in London, for the Friends of the Earth Europe network in Brussels and online for young climate activists from across Europe brought together by Oxfam’s EU Advocacy Office.
Earthsight’s in-depth investigations expose environmental crimes and demonstrate the urgency of robust EU deforestation and corporate due diligence laws. Discover their most recent undercover investigation, Blood-Stained Birch, on the EU trade in Russian timber in breach of the sanctions imposed on Russia in response to the war in Ukraine.
Friends of the Earth Europe’s team and their colleagues from across Europe are building their EU advocacy muscles to resist the new Commission’s deregulation agenda which is threatening essential EU environmental and social sustainability legislation.
Oxfam's SPARK EU Climate Action is an online and offline training programme for young climate activists interested in learning about EU and global climate policies. Our session on Advocating for EU climate action: the EU institutions inside-out zoomed in on the very challenging EU political context with an insider from the European Parliament and then dived into the essentials of how the EU institutions function.

Consultancy: our research on unfair trading practices published & presented in the European Parliament
On 6 February, Maria Laura Helguero presented the findings of her research for Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO) on the implementation of the EU Unfair Trading Practices Directive in Ecuador's cocoa sector in the European Parliament. The event was organised by FTAO and Oxfam and hosted by MEPs Annalisa Corrado and Cristina Guarda. In its Vision for Agriculture and Food published the following week, the European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating unfair practices in the agrifood chain and promised to address the issue of farmers being forced to sell their products below production costs. Learn about why this is important and download the report with the results of our research here.
